PORKY BEST the first to be recognized as DAVAO QUALITY - THE BEST NO LESS.

For so many years, this Davao City-based entrepreneur has been consistent in improving her products and widening her market. Alicia del Mundo, owner of Porky Best Products, said that success in business means acquiring the qualities of a good entrepreneur. 
She said that success is a mix of everything - from possessing the entrepreneurial skills and spirit down to good customer relations.
“One must have determination, perseverance, hardwork, honesty, and strong faith in God. You also have to consider your clients all the time. You have to know their preferences and you have to listen to what they clamor for,” she said adding that a successful businessman doesn’t stop from making improvements especially in finding innovations.
She even said that adversity must further motivate everyone to do more in order to succeed.
“Adversity, you know, being poor and in need, is the mother of all progress. I have proven that,” she said.
Alicia said that if one is deprived of experiencing an affluent life that should not stop him from dreaming big
“It should even motivate you to dream more and to do more,” she stressed.

The beginning of Porky Best
Between 1972 and 1976, Alicia and her husband Merlin were into selling of fresh and frozen meat.
“If may excess stock o ‘yong mga di naibenta, ginagawa kong tocino at longganisa. Pinatikim ko sa mga kaibigan ‘yong mga gawa ko para pwede silang mag-suggest at mag-comment tungkol sa lasa,” Alicia said.

After getting feedbacks from friends, Alicia then settled for the recipe that passed the discriminating taste of those who tried her tocino andlongganisa.
On September 7, 1977, Alicia and Merlin established Porky Best. It was also the time when their meat shop was no longer doing so good.
“We thought of selling processed meat kasi sabi nga ng mommy ko noong araw, food is always a necessity. Even if the economy is so bad, people would still buy food,” Alicia recalled.
On January 1978, the operation of Porky Best officially started withtocino and longganisa as the initial products.
“At first, we really thought of using Alicia’s Meat Products but during our discussion, we all agreed that Porky Best sounds better. It somehow tells that our pork products are the best,” she said.
In 1981, Porky Best started producing chicharon from the skin of the pork they were using for tocino and longganisa.
They were then selling the students’ pack at 90 centavos each (this is now being sold at P5.00 each).
“One time, may isang veterinarian na lumapit sa akin. He told me that it was mentioned in one of the seminars which he attended that Porky Best has been a trailblazer in terms of taste especially with our newest line – the chicharon,” Alicia said.

Besting them all
Aside from marketing their products through friends, Alicia and Merlin also participated in trade fairs spearheaded by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in order to increase sales and find new markets.
“We became famous through word-of-mouth. But during the early part of 1990s, we joined the National Trade Fair (NTF) at the (SM) Mega Mall. With the NTF, we were able to find new clients,” Alicia said.
Since then, Porky Best has already been a regular participant of trade fairs, be it local or national.
Moreover, Alicia said, the package of assistance that it has been receiving from DTI XI and the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) have helped them a lot in terms of improving their products. (published M Magazine, Q1 2010 issue)  

The company was recognized as THE MOST OUTSTANDING MSME OF DAVAO CITY FOR 2007 awarded by DTI/DCCCII and partner agencies, its owner ALICIA F. DEL MUNDO as the MOST OUTSTANDING LADY ENTREPRENEUR OF 
DAVAO CITY and to complete a grandslam the chicharon products of the company, after screening done by a panel composed of representatives from DTI, DOST, DAVAO CITY, DA, BFAD, DCCCII AND THE DAVAO BRANDING COMMITTEE, was among the first to be recognized as DAVAO QUALITY -  THE BEST NO LESS.

In 2007, after months of research and development, the Company launched the Microwavable Chicharon - envisioned as the chicharon for the world market.  Numerous inquiries were received from interested persons, businessmen , importers and consolidators after they watched the demos done in trade fairs and above all after they tasted the chicharon with the unique flavor and taste.  True enough in December 2008, through a consolidator, the company started supplying an importer  from Dubai.  The product has also become a favorite "pasalubong" of OFWs returning to their host countries as well as Filipinos going abroad whose relatives and friends request for the "new" way of enjoing one of  our favorite "anytime" "any occasion" food - The PORKY BEST CHICHARON.
