THE Davao del Norte Electric Cooperative (Daneco) approved a resolution that hands over the business of supplying power to the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) to the Davao Light and Power Company in Sunday’s assembly at the Maco Gymnasium in Maco, Compostela Valley.
The general assembly was attended by almost 9,000 registered regular member-consumers who unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the Daneco board of directors and general manager to sign a memorandum of agreement with Davao Light for the transfer of Igacos power distribution service to the latter.
“This is a very promising development that would ease the apprehensions of existing and would-be investors of Igacos regarding the instability of power supply to our Island City,” Igacos City Administrator Cleto Gales.
“This would be a big boost to the investment climate in Igacos,” he said.
Under Daneco, Igacos has been suffering from intermittent power outages, some taking hours and days, especially when the underwater power cables that transmit the power from the mainland Davao are affected through strong wave movements or passing ships.
Davao del Norte 2nd district Representative Anton Lagdameo Jr., who has been at the forefront of the initiative to let Davao Light take over the Daneco franchise over Igacos because of unsatisfactory performance of the electric cooperative in meeting the demands of the island city, also welcomed the development.
“That’s good news for Igacos as this turnover will surely usher progress and development for the city,” Lagdameo said in a text message.
“We have fought long and hard for this day and I am thankful that finally progress will be felt in terms of improved services and facilities for my constituents,” he added.
