ECO and OXO BIO PLASTIC in DAVAO

June 28, 2012 ban of NON-BIODEGRADABLE here in Davao.  All business establishments in the city in compliance with the total ban on the use of plastic bags and polystyrene foam or Styrofoam as beverage and food containers is strictly monitored by our City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro).

Some of the warehouse supermarket here in Davao are already selling ECO-PLASTIC to support DAVAO CITY campaign against NON-BIO Plastic.

If you notice National Bookstore,SM, NCCC,Victoria, GMall and Robinson's are already using bio-
degradable plastics last year.   After all plastic that are non-biodegradable are
out, Davao City will be a 100% biodegradable city.

How can you differentiate Bio to

Non-Bio plastic?

Biodegradable plastic bags are often made from farmed products like cornstarch, which, in the right conditions, will break down into elements like carbon dioxide, water and methane. Biodegradable bags are generally best suited to composting and may contribute to methane emissions if sent to landfill. To meet international standards, bags need to compost within 12 weeks and fully biodegrade within 6 months. Biodegradable bags are not suited to recycling.

As I touched it the texture of the said plastic is very different compared to NON-BIODEGRADABLE plastics.

This is the old plastic used by Carenderia here in our village.

Plastics are usually long chains of carbon and hydrogen atoms. The enzymes found in living things can perform many chemical reactions, but they generally exploit some sort of imbalance of electric charge within a molecule to do their job. A long chain of carbons and hydrogens contains very balanced charges along its length, making the molecule stable and difficult to change with enzymes. Most biodegradable substances contain some mixture of carbon and atoms like oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus, which create charge imbalances that enzymes can exploit. There are some bacteria that can break down plastics. These bacteria usually contain enzymes called oxygenases, which can add oxygen to a long carbon chain. This destabilizes the local electric charge, and the plastic can then be broken down. You don't find oxygenase enzymes too often, however, because they can easily destroy the molecules in the bacteria that carries it.

Learn to live life with less plastic… for the health of our bodies, our oceans, our planet.
