More than 30 employees of Davao Light, the Aboitiz-owned electric utility serving Davao City, on Saturday, July 28, constructed retaining walls on a rolling portion of the Gawad Kalinga Village in Upper Kibalang, Marilog, some 59 kilometers from the city proper.
The retaining wall made of used round wooden poles is to ensure that no landslides or soil erosion will occur on one side of the GK village where there is gradual embankment. Two houses and a health center are built in the area and are about to be completed.
The employees belong to the Distribution Network Department (DND) headed by Engr. Orville Lazaro. Their volunteer work is part of the thrust of management to engage the employees on socially-relevant projects such as the GK housing support. It is also coordinated by the company’s Community Relations Department (Comrel), being the overall point department for the company’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) program implementation.
Aside from the group that constructed the retaining wall earlier volunteers also helped build the two houses near the slope, renovate and refurbish the day care center, as well as the health center that was started by another foundation.
Davao Light employees also wired the GK houses to suit to a solar lighting project that it provided in the village way back in 2010.
Volunteerism is a culture that has been installed in every Davao Light employee. It is a way of life in the company.
