Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), in partnership with the local government of Davao City, today launched another first with Davao Life, the official mobile app for the city’s tourism efforts in time for the Kadayawan Festival.
The mobile app for Android phones has a corresponding website that can also be accessed from a mobile Internet browser. It’s the first such mobile app offering from any local government in the Philippines.
“We already completed our network modernization upgrade of our base stations here in Davao so the timing is just right. This app is a good example of how mobile technologies can be maximized by local governments for their projects. We’re happy to support Davao City in their tourism efforts. We’re also excited about doing this for other interested local governments.” said Rolando Peña, Head of PLDT-SMART Network and IP Systems.
Subscribers who download the app can browse information and photos on the history, activities and exclusive business promos for this year’s Kadayawan Festival. It also has a Madayaw! Section containing festival-related features.
Meanwhile, the Davao Life! Portion of the app contains news culled from davaocity.gov.ph, listing of events, information on tourist spots and activities, and interactive maps.
Soon, sections on the Araw ng Dabaw, Pasko Fiesta and Summerfest will also be integrated.
Smart commissioned the creation of the mobile app and site from Alien Ware Group, a Davao-based tech company as part of its thrust to help local startups in the regions.
The Davao: Life is Here! Mobile service is owned by the City Government of Davao and its contents maintained by the Davao City Information Office. The application can be downloaded from Google Play by any mobile Android phone user. An IOS version for iPhones is also now in the works.
This mobile app offering is being launched just right after the conclusion of the first Smart Technology Festival in Davao City. Held at the end of last month, the week-long event featured activities such as the Davao DevDay HTML5 hackathon, mobile Internet seminars, student promotions and a technology entrepreneurship bootcamp with IdeaSpace Foundation, Inc.
