A total of 60 police officers from Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao City Police Office and Compostela Valley, and four members of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team in Buhangin and Sasa, this city, are undergoing skills training on how to better respond to disasters.
The five-day training is being held from June 11-15 at the regional headquarters of the Philippine National Police (PNP) at Camp Catitipan, Buhangin, this city.
Supt. Marshall P. Magistrado, a regional police spokesperson, said the participants took part in the PNP mobile training team disaster preparedness, rescue and relief operations.
Senior Supt. Adriatico del Camat Jr. of the Police Community Relations Group from PNP Camp Crame and five other officers from the national headquarters are spearheading the activity.
Magistrado said this batch was the third in a series of workshop trainings which is planned to be conducted quarterly.
He said the PNP purposely set a cap on the number of slots so the participants are given full attention. They are slowly training officers to prepare them in natural calamity disaster response.
For instance, Magistrado said the trainees are taught how to properly paddle on rubber boat, how to rescue a drowning victim, safety tips and procedures in assisting victims of flooding, landslide and other disasters.
“The police are the first to respond. They should be trained in this kind of situation like giving first aid, rescue and proper evacuation of victims in calamities or disasters,” he said.
Meanwhile, Magistrado admitted the shortcomings of the police officers when it comes to first aid.
