No need to implement K-12 program

DAVAO CITY Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said Sunday he is not amenable to the implementation of the K-12 program of the Department of Education (DepEd), but expressed support to the use of mother trongue-based multi-lingual education program to Grades 1 to 2 pupils.

"Dili ko bilib sa another two years (I don't believe in another two years to be added to basic education)," he said in his regular Sunday Program “Gikan sa Masa Para sa Masa.”

He said there is no need to implement the new program, adding there are even subjects that are not useful to the learning of the students, like Algebra.

"Wala jud ko natun-an sa Algebra hantod karon (I learned nothing from Algebra)," he said.

He said basic arithmetic would already suffice in the elementary and secondary education.

He said subjects like fractions and statistics, among others, are what the students need.

"Ngano dungagan man og letra ang arithmetic (Why there is a need to add letters in arithmetic)," the vice mayor said, referring to Algebra.

Meanwhile, Duterte supported DepEd's move to allow the use of Cebuano dialect by teachers in classrooms to let students understand deeper what are being discussed in the class.

DepEd already implemented the program in all schools nationwide at the beginning of classes June 4 last week. The program covers pupils from Grade 1 until they reach Grade 3.

Teachers already underwent a series of workshops last month on how they will go about with the approach in teaching.

DepEd already provided teachers with instructional materials in Cebuano.
