Philippines' banana king dies

The Philippines' banana king Don Antonio O. Floirendo Sr. passed away at 6:50 p.m. on Friday.

He was 96.

His remains will be at 88 Cambridge Circle, Forbes Park in Makati City on Saturday and Sunday.
 
His body will be brought to Davao on Monday.

Don Antonio is the father-in-law of Margie Moran, Miss Universe 1973.

His son 'Tony Boy', husband of Moran, served as congressman of Davao del Norte.

The Floirendo family owns vast landholdings and other business interests in Davao.

Among these are the Tagum Agricultural Development Co. Inc. or TADECO., one of the largest banana plantations in the country.

TADECO exports fresh Cavendish bananas to Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, China, Middle East, and other territories.

The Floirendos own Pearl Farm Beach Resort, one of the high-end resorts in Davao.

Don Antonio founded the ANFLO Group of Companies or ANFLO Management and Investment Corp. (ANFLOCOR).

According to the corporate website, Don Antonio's "business acumen...foresight and gut-feel....enabled him to build a business conglomerate which is proudly Mindanao-based."

During the martial law regime, he was criticized as one of the cronies of then President Ferdinand Marcos.

Aside from exporting bananas, ANFLOCOR is also involved in real estate development, trucking, and packaging of agricultural products.

TADECO is the flagship company of ANFLOCOR.

It was organized in December 1950. It was initially involved in abaca production and then shifted to banana production.

Another company of the ANFLO Group is Davao Agricultural Ventures Corp., which produces and exports fresh Del Monte pineapples.
